Art for All: Nov 9 to 14th Oppenheimer Park

Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival in association with Vancouver Moving Theatre and Jumblies Theatre (Toronto) and in cooperation with Carnegie Community Centre/Oppenheimer Park presents

2nd Downtown Eastside
Nov. 9-14, 2010, Oppenheimer Park
488 Powell Street, Vancouver, BC

The 2nd Downtown Eastside Arts For All Institute- Oppen-Art is a five day intensive course that combines community art leadership training with participation in a community art project. It’s all inspired by plans for historic Oppenheimer Park as a place for growing, learning, art and healing.

During the morning, the institute will provide a small group of participants with in-depth leadership training in the principles and practices of community-engaged art; the tremendous value it has for community; and things you need to know to launch your own project. Activities include presentations, discussions, hands-on art-making, creative explorations and resources to take home.

During the afternoon, participants join a larger community workshop to collaboratively generate designs, ideas, stories, music and food that celebrate Oppenheimer Park, gardens, healthy food, right-to-food initiatives and indigenous plants. The week culminates with a feast for all participants during which the week’s activities will be shared, performed and documented.

Venue: Oppenheimer Park Activity House, 488 Powell Street

Fun making mosaics @ Kettle Friendship Society.

A group from MOBY joined some of the people at The Kettle to make mosaic stepping stones for the MOBY mosaic pathway. All of the stones were round and very colourful, but we all created our own designs. My design was of my favourite vegetable; the tomato.  We will have several more workshops, some at The Kettle and some at MOBY so watch for notices in the near future.

Thank you Edith for all your hard work organizing this workshop plus getting those beautiful tiles.

Sharing Art and so much more!

How sweet of the children from MOSAIC Daycare sharing their art with the community. It is these moments on a beautiful spring day with the blossoms blooming on the trees, the sun on your face, and the sounds of children laughing and the sweetness of a child’s drawing that tell how wonderful the world is. Please take a moment in the next few days to capture these moments, take them in and pass on the amazing feeling to the community around you.

That is why the Larry Young Park and Local Heroes Pathway was built. To experience and  share these moments.
