There is still plenty to do in the garden come October and not just cleaning it up. Here is a great list from Delia’s Kitchen Garden book.
Clean: Green house or cold frame (if you are lucky enough to have one)
Dig: next Year’s runner bean trench
Harvest: eggplant, beet root, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, leeks, mustard spinach, rocket (arugula, pak choi, parsnips, pumpkin, raspberries, sweet pepper, tomatoes.
Plant: rhubarb (this is a good time to split large plants)
Protect: autumn/winter salad mix, broad bean, lettuce, peas, radicchio, rocket, spring onions
Sow: broad beans, garlic peas

And here is a link to a brussel sprout recipe. I have never tried this one but people are raving about it. I find the trick to yummy brussel sprout is NOT over cooking them. Roasting them in the oven brings out their sweetness.
