Yes we are now in our 3rd year of celebrating East Van Heroes! We are calling on YOU the community our peeps for nominations of local heroes. Those great people that have made East Van a better, cooler more amazing place to live.
On June 6th 2009 we honoured Stg Larry Young a police officer who died in the line of duty and on June 5th 2010 we were please to honour two more heroes: Matt Hern one of the the founders of Car Free Vancouver and the Purple Thistle and Eileen Mosca an artist and extraordinary volunteer. On August 11th 2012 we will be honouring 2 more heroes unveiling a plaque in their name at the Larry Young Park and Local Hero’s pathway at 1736 East 11th Ave in Vancouver.
We are excepting nominations until 5 pm July 20th 2011
The rules are simple:
- The nominee needs to have affected East Vancouver in a positive way.
- Tell us their story in 250 words or less.
- We will need the names and contact information of the 2 people nominating the local hero. These nominators can request to remain anonymous.
- A person can only nominate 1 person per year.
- Nominations must be in by 5pm July20th 2012. Emailed to email@example.com.The nominee‘s name will remain in the contention for the Local Hero’s Pathway Award for 3 years after the nomination.
The nominee can be alive today or have past. Please think about all the people in your neighbourhood who make a difference. This is an award to celebrate the unsung heroes.
This year’s Hero’s will be honours at a street dinner August 11th 2012.
Harvest: radish, beetroot, broad beans, arugula, carrots, herbs, onions, red current, strawberries, turnips, peas, French beans.
Plant: cabbages, cauliflowers
Sow: beetroot, carrots, radishes, rocket/arugula , spinach, spring onions, dwarf French beans
Pot up: strawberry runners
Plant: basil, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflowers, celery, cucumber, dwarf French beans, leeks, runner beans, tomatoes (late May).
Protect: peas, beans, strawberries.
Sow: beans, beetroots, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, parsnip, pumpkin, lettuce, peas, radishes, rocket/arugula, spinach, spring onions, sprouting broccoli, sweet corn, turnips.
Put up: runner bean frame work
Remove: summer-fruiting raspberry flowers
May is here! We have an upcoming work party on Thursday May 10 from 1-4pm, a great chance to get some volunteer hours in. Also, the Local Hero’s Dinner planning committee is meeting on Tuesday, May 8. This would also count towards volunteer hours.

With spring around the corner, My Own Backyard Garden is pleased to offer a rich, black soil/compost blend to gardeners. It is called black gold, anything can grow in it.

HOW: Bring your own bag/wheelbarrow and shovel yourself.
$4 per bag OR $5 per wheelbarrow (it’s a steal), so don’t wait till the last minute because this stuff won’t last long!
